Your Lehigh Valley dentist will begin by cleaning and numbing your mouth in preparation for treatment. A dental drill will then be used to remove the decayed enamel and reshape your tooth to create a stable platform for your new dental crown.
Using dental putty or a 3D scanner, we will create impressions or models of your teeth, which will be used to build your custom dental crown. We’ll also capture some additional images of your teeth to ensure that your new crown matches the shade of your natural smile perfectly. Your model or impression will be sent to a dental lab where your crown will be crafted out of durable materials. Your dentist will attach a temporary crown for the few weeks it will take for your porcelain crown to be made in order to protect your newly-prepared tooth.
Once we receive your permanent dental crown, you’ll return to our office for a final fitting. First, we’ll ensure that your new crown fits comfortably and make any necessary adjustments. When we’ve achieved the right fit, your dentist will permanently secure it in place with a powerful dental adhesive.

To care for your dental crown, all you need to do is treat it like you would your natural teeth. Be sure to brush at least twice a day for at least two minutes and floss at least once, preferably at night. In addition to visiting your dentist every six months for regular visits, avoid snacking on overly hard or sticky foods to help extend the lifespan of your dental crown.
Dental crowns can last as long as 15 years when they are cared for properly. Remember there's nothing your dentist can do that you can't undo with poor oral hygiene. Keeping up with good oral health habits, like brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day, as well as seeing your nearby dentist every 6 months for regular cleanings and checkups can also enhance your crown’s longevity.
Dental crowns that are placed as a part of restorative treatment usually qualify for insurance benefits but we encourage you to reach out to your insurance plan. The exact amount will vary.
